Somewhere along the way, a lot of talented professionals learned to treat visibility and bragging as the same thing. They're not.
Self-promotion inflates what's there. Accurate representation just makes it visible. One is dishonest. The other is just honest, and out loud.
Why the Two Get Confused
Most of us were taught, somewhere early, that good work should be quiet. Modesty reads as trustworthy. Volume reads as insecure. That's a reasonable lesson, and it's also incomplete.
The lesson forgets that there's a difference between claiming more than you've earned and simply stating what you've actually done, in plain language, somewhere people can find it.
What This Distinction Changes
Once you see the difference, the discomfort around visibility usually loosens. You're not being asked to inflate anything. You're being asked to stop hiding something real.
That's a smaller ask than it feels like at first. And it's the one that actually closes the gap between what you've done and what people can see.
